The Humanist Society of Victoria

humanist children reading booksThe Humanist Society of Victoria (HSV) works to build a more civilised society fostering ethics based on human values. It considers that reason, free inquiry and a scientific approach enable us to understand our universe and our place in it. It defends freedom and democracy and provides a positive alternative to religious and dogmatic creeds. It supports separation of church and state, and secular education.

With the membership you receive our montly VH newsletter as well as the national quarterly the Australian Humanist (AH). We have monthly meetings as well as monthly lectures. You can become as involved as you wish. Also check out the submissions that are so important to the HSV's work.

Humanism is a worldview and a moral philosophy that considers humans to be of primary importance. It is a perspective common to a wide range of ethical stances that attaches importance to human dignity, concerns, and capabilities, particularly rationality. Although the word has many senses, its current philosophical meaning comes into focus when contrasted to the supernatural or to appeals to higher authority.[1][2] Since the 19th century, humanism has been associated with an anti-clericalism inherited from the 18th-century Enlightenment philosophes. The term covers organized non-theistic religions, secular humanism, and a humanistic life stance.[3]
